Working with the Mind Under Stress: From Negativity Bias to Clear, Values-Based Action
The Nature of Thought
Your mind is one of your greatest assets. It allows you to assess risk, make rapid decisions, and respond effectively in moments that require clarity and precision. For many first responders and trauma-exposed individuals, the mind has been trained to operate under pressure—and it often does so remarkably well.
Yet under chronic stress, the same mind that protects can also begin to amplify threat. It may replay difficult calls, anticipate worst-case outcomes, or narrate harsh conclusions about yourself, others, or the world. What once served survival can quietly become a source of suffering.
